My landlords had an open house at the mill they renovated and I live in. I set up some lights and tried to photograph everyone… for fun…these are favorites.

borderland – A film by Cozette Carroll & Julian Russell
Synopsis:
BORDERLAND is a short documentary film that explores the cultural, historical and personal landscape of the inner German border 20 years after its fall.
Filmmakers Cozette Carroll and Julian Russell filmed along the former border collecting images and stories; creating a collage of memories from former East German citizens.
In Berlin, tourists photograph themselves in front of rusting relics trying to imagine the city divided. For those who lived through it the reunification of East and West Germany proved to be more complicated than the joyous images portrayed on the TV news.
What happened when socialist East Germany was enveloped by the West and what became of the 858 miles of fences, watch towers and death strips as nature began to reclaim the land?
Borderland…coming soon
Cozette and I are*so close* to finishing our film; “Borderland”, that looks back over the division and reuinification of Germany…so much work…
Details and a website will be up soon!

NEW STUDIO!

This year found me getting married and moving to Central Falls, RI.
Central Falls is less than an hour from Boston and just a few minutes outside Providence …and…is home to my new, bright, sunny studio.
It is perfect for portraits, fashion and products. There are couches, wi-fi and coffee is always brewing.
“Life is once, forever” – HCB quote
“…Photography as I conceive it, well, it’s a drawing. Immediate sketch, done with intuition and you can correct it. If you have to correct it, it’s with the next picture. But life is very fluid; sometimes the pictures disappear, and there’s nothing you can do. You can’t tel the person, ‘Oh, please smile again. Do that gesture again.’ Life is once, forever and new all the time.” – Henri Cartier-Bresson
Redux One Take Two
I took this almost two years ago and overlooked it…. not sure how… I like it a lot.

Laundry List Ending with Steven Shore
In the past two weeks I have moved into a swell studio in Rhode Island, finished three multimedia pieces for the re-branding of Child Fund International, half-built a woodshed for my soon-to-be-in-laws, finally realized I am getting married in exactly one month and become a reluctant Stephen Shore fan…
Practice Cake
There has been a lot of baking at my place lately.

I developed the first test- roll of film from my new-to-me/old Mamiya 645…no light leaks…no shutter leaks…no digital, clay-like-weirdness…nice!

Gin Tonic Scrabble
Another stop-motion experiment, or two.

Egg
After spending the better part of the last week working on a video project for the CCF, I have been thinking a lot about video and film and am mulling around the idea of putting together a reel of stuff for fun and profit. The following is a short, stop-motion piece about my breakfast…just an experiment, really, but a delicious one.

More High-Key
A client of mine made this spiffy promotional item and asked me to shoot it, high-key on white, for his portfolio. I added some glass to get that web 2.0 reflection thingy. My new 60″ Softlighter did a great job, again.
Headshots
Earlier in the week I spent the day shooting some high-key headshots for a new ad agency in Boston; Gray & Partners. A great bunch of folks. I used a 60″ Softlighter for the first time and really like this light…can’t wait to shoot more with it.
Pavement Art
German artist Edgar Mueller makes some pretty great street-art illusions.
If you like this sort of thing Julian Beever is also a must see
Portrait
I have been getting interested in portraiture. I find it difficult…very challenging. What I love about straight-out photojournalism / documentary photography; namely that it is as real as possible, is a hard thing to achieve in such a contrived situation as a portrait setting. The photographers that are good at it amaze me.
Here is an old friend, Tom Bianchi, that happens to be a fixture in the Boston music scene. He’s great, btw, go see him if you can. www.24hourtom.com
